Blue Marine Foundation: Safegear

Blue Marine are going to work with the fishing fleet at Plymouth to test a new approach to stopping ‘Ghost Fishing Gear’ - fishing gear lost at sea, which causes significant damage to marine wildlife. They will work with the fishing community to attach beacons to their fishing gear to prevent other boats snagging the gear, and to enable them to track and retrieve any gear that does get moved by other boats, or weather. As well as causing a significant amount of plastic pollution at sea, lost fishing gear costs the fishing community a huge amount every season. So this solution really is a win win. And if they can prove it works in Plymouth Sound, the aim is to advocate for national policy adoption and publish a template with global significance in the fight against marine plastic.
